Some Nice Words About Brenda Smith Myles

  • Brenda Myles has been a very valuable source of ideas for me in my work with the ASD Nest program and in my teaching of graduate students in Special Education at Hunter College. Those ideas reached me through her presentations as well as her publications. I have heard Brenda make presentations multiple times and have always come away impressed by both her ideas and the richness of her illustrations of those ideas in action.

Her presentations have the perfect combination of research, humor, compassion and practical application.

  • For over 10 years, I have travelled to the US to attend an annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. One significant reason for that is to listen to the high quality of speakers presenting there. A significant appeal for me has always been to have the opportunity to learn from Brenda Smith Myles. I know Brenda through her books, of course, but I always find her presentations to be accessible, informative and inspiring. Often, my thinking is challenged in a positive way. Her presentation style makes concepts clear and memorable and causes audiences to view and rethink their own understandings and knowledge. Her unique perception on how autistic people think and learn, allied with her skill in communicating these ideas, make her one of the best speakers in Autism in the world, in my view. I have worked in Autism for over 40 years and attended many conferences, so I can say that with confidence. Recently asked by conference organisers in Scotland and the UK if there was one presenter from any part of the world I would most like to listen to again, I had no hesitation in proposing Brenda.
